Abstract

The Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, an international treaty that was the key legal document in the fight against human trafficking for almost fifty years, came into force in 1951. This year marks the seventieth anniversary of this event, so this article will focus on said Convention. The methodology used for this paper will be documentary research, particularly through articles from peer-reviewed academic journals, book chapters, documents from well-accredited non-governmental organizations, as well as United Nations agencies, and various sources of international law. First, there will be a historical review of how the feminist movement managed to place this issue on the international political agenda. Then, we will analyze the content of the 1951 Convention and how it was received. And, finally, we will explain the new treaties on human trafficking that have emerged after the 1951 Convention. We will discuss its historical effectiveness and how creating these international documents has been the victory of an organized civil society.
